FIRE FROM HEAVEN!

  “Then the fire of the Lord fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.”

(1 Kings 18.38)  

It was a decisive dispute; a matter of life or death. Ahab is known and we know how he acts. He has his troupe of priests, ministers, followers and bewitched minions. The wickedness of his heart is permanent and incorrigible. They are skillful at distorting the truth and the Law of God (Genesis 2:3-5). Jezebel is the attentive advisor, a genuine companion and promoter of the atrocities of the king.

The altars of Baal are monumental. Surrounded by people. Stones, wood, treasures and great wealth. Imposing because of their greatness, they fascinate and challenge its thousands of worshipers. An empty fascination, beautiful and noisy. People screaming, crying, bleeding and imprecating names and even swearwords. In their despair, people try to wake the "gods"... Or awaken them; uttering funny stories which make people smile... However, the "gods" can’t move, can’t act, can’t speak and they never respond!

Why can't they act? Why can't they change everything around?

Actually, they can’t do anything because they act at the level of the flesh, the mind and the passing illusions of the crowds. Everything they know lies around that monument, which was built by the hands of priests without life in the Spirit and God's Revelation. Men who have never surrendered to the foot of the Altar of Sacrifice (Romans 12.1), nor have never experienced anything of the Lord and the mysteries of faith! (Isaiah 6.1-14).

That battle belonged to the Lord.

And He already had his Commander, the Prophet Elijah.

So Elijah cries out to Heaven, touching the heart of God:

               Hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the Lord God (v.37). He never fails to attend to his chosen ones.

The men, who are separated unto God, are untouchable. No one can harm, kill or destroy them. He acts sovereignly before all the people, face to face with Baal, before the crowd of followers, before the altar they built and under the sight of Ahab.

               Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word. (v.36)

In the life of a man of God and His Church, there is a moment when the Lord says: THAT'S ENOUGH! I've already tested my Prophet, my people and my Church. I'll attend to it my own way! (Elijah already knew that the Lord would do.)

               Elijah took twelve stones…And with the stones he built an altar…he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and said, Fill four barrels with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice, and on the wood. (vs.31-33)

Without the Altar in order, the water doesn't flow neither the fire falls. Today, the outcry of crowds gets lost in the lulling of nights, in the bitter tears of the followers of Baal, in search of meaning to the emptiness of their souls!

First of all, the Lord commands. Then, using the Water of Life and the Blood which purifies, the anointing of the Holy Spirit joins the burning flame, which sanctifies us.

Then, fire fell from Heaven!

Send us this Fire, Lord!
